All of the world is a ‘We Space’, this is so very true! Interestingly though, not much misses our inquiring minds, as there are those who have been noticing that there are actual distinctions in the way we can come together. In the sequel to Ken Wilber’s, ‘Integral Spirituality’, Dustin DiPerna's book 'Streams of Wisdom' gives us seven variations of ways we come together to create, We Spaces. For instance, when we gather for a lecture, a movie, or a football game or even a family reunion, those type of common interest gathering's can be called ‘Conventional We Spaces.’ When we sit in a group therapy or with our friends to share our stories, that is an ‘Interpersonal We Space’. And yes these various distinctions can intermix, there are no hard lines! There are ‘Impersonal We Space’s’ when we come together to talk about a book or how we are going to plan the festival, retreat, or conference. There are also ‘Transformational We Spaces’ wherein we come together for inspiration on Sunday mornings or we sit together in a Satsang. Those are the first four obvious ways in which we come together and again there is a lot of overlapping.
Today, I want to do my best to describe one of the first levels of ‘Transpersonal We Space’. By transpersonal I mean going beyond our individual personality to appreciate the field of energy in which all of our personalities arise. If we can successfully do that, and it is a stretch, we can begin to not only acknowledge our commonalities but truly live in them! We experience our distinct personality traits pretty much all day everyday, however in a 'Transpersonal' or 'Awakened We Space,' when we set the intention, we can experience the profound liberation of going beyond our separate sense of self. Di Perna calls the first level of Transpersonal We Space, an Awakened We Space. The awakened aspect of this type of gathering is a simple yet very profound shift in focus. You can say it is moving our focus from me to we. What I am speaking of is quite esoteric, so I can appreciate that not everyone will be ready for it., even so I have given myself the fascinating challenge of doing my best to facilitate such experiences so more and more people can at least have the opportunity to try it. After pretty much an entire life time of sensing that there had to be something more we could say to one another, because there was more to notice I now know that I am not alone in this fascination! Because I have been keenly following the We Space trail for some time I have made some very wonderful friends along the way who are as passionate as I am about this new way of being together.
So yes, WE SPACE practices have been unfolding in small pockets for nearly two decades. There is now a book entitled, ’Cohering the We Space’ which goes a long way toward legitimizing the practice. The ‘Collective Field’ that has been fascinating the ‘Cultural Creatives’ or the otherwise spiritually inclined is also being called the ‘Inter-subjective Field. Now I am going to take a stab at interpreting what the Inter-subjective Field’ means; You have your thoughts and feelings and so do I, as does everyone. However, when we intentionally come together to lean into and focus on the subtle energy in the center and between each other we notice there is a combined field of energy or Inter-Subjective Field. Does anyone really know whether or not our early ancestors ever intentionally looked into the inter-subjective field? Our history seems to indicate that we have always had hierarchies or leaders who have controlled the intersubjective field. But the question titillates my curiosity and is relevant from the standpoint that if this was a specific practice for thousands of years around the campfire or otherwise then there would be a good cultural groove we can access, as deeply ingrained habits in culture do not disappear easily. I only know from my own experience and what I have read and heard others say, when we turn our focus onto the field of energy between ourselves remarkable things happen.
Higher We Spaces or Awakened We Spaces are a bona fide emerging spiritual practice, and I am adding the descriptor of spiritual to this practice, although it is being cultivated in the field of transpersonal psychology. I have no direct experience of its psychological uses other than to say that being witnessed as my higher self and witnessing others as their higher selves have been tremendously therapeutic! And in fact, I should add that ‘subjective and objective’ are psychological and philosophical terms, which are used to distinguish the inner realm from the outer realm. Acknowledging our inner world of thoughts and feelings and how they might be related to the outer world of materialism or the physical manifest world is extremely important and relevant to our time. It has only been a little over one hundred years in our current history that the general populace has even started to become interested in the interior world. Buddhists have been looking inward well over two thousand years but their findings have been little known much less acknowledged by western civilization until relatively recently. So let me come back around to say that the interest in the inter-subjective field is the latest exploration in the realm of consciousness research. It is challenging to talk about because of its ethereal unseen nature but the more we can acquaint ourselves with the eternal aspect of who we really are . . . well, that’s got to be good and wholly worthwhile.
We have been perceiving each other’s energy fields at various levels of intuitive consciousness forever, but during ‘We Space’ or let me use my iteration, during a ‘Circle of Creative Harmony’, we are wanting to go a step further and actually begin to acknowledge to each other that the field is there! We are wanting to consider, feel into, and explore how our subjective experiences might be interplaying with each other. If our thoughts and feelings are forms of subtle energy and we know we can affect one another, what can happen when we acknowledge this, explore it . . . with intention? We know we can conjure ourselves into the same “mood” so to speak, we can all be elated when our team wins, we can cry together in a sad movie . . . but in a ‘Higher We’ or an Awakened We Space, we want to pause and acknowledge what we are feeling and thinking about our shared experience, give it voice, words, in short we want to begin bringing the unseen into our relative world. Because we are having an intentional shared experience we can come together with fascination, and by exchanging dialogue we can enter into a more common unified experience with much more depth. Lovers often do this before and after the act of making love, or another example . . . we can all be having the shared experience of laying on the beach on a beautifully perfect day, but another dimension of magic happens when we speak to our ‘unique’ experience in those moments on the beach. We find that our unique experiences are greatly enriched by the sharing of others’ experience. So not only can a 'Higher We' experience enrich our moments it has to be contributing good energy to the overall Noosphere or mental membrane of our planet. There is no doubt that this is early days in this practice, but to deny it’s possibilities is well … as sad as losing a lover or leaving the beach to go back to work in an office with no windows.
We have all heard how we are most likely using only a very small percentage of our brain. The same is true of our capacity for awakened awareness. My teacher, Jeff Carreira uses the metaphor of the street lamp as an analogy. We are only capable of experiencing the area that is lite by the street lamp while all that is in the darkness remains outside our experience. I am firmly in the camp of wanting to brighten that street lamp of our awareness to experience more! When I have actually caught a glimpse of the 'new' I have found it also enriches all the other aspects of my life and there has been enough of those unique experiences that I have no choice now but to keep moving forward, not in a rush or a panic but with surrendered trust and assurance that there is so much more going on than than we can ever imagine! What I have come to appreciate is that Awakened Awareness needs to also be created in culture between us, in our relationships, with new agreements and new ways of being with each other. None of us can be an island onto ourselves. We are being called to take the next leap of faith of actually practicing more of what our great wisdom traditions started but rather than only relying our their wise words we can now bring forth our own insights from when we come together in Creative Harmony. The way we communicate with one another needs to match our inner capacity of awareness. Meanwhile I am digging the currents of subtle energy flowing through all of us as we rock in the embrace of earths song, spinning around in our galaxy. Lets bring it ALL in ... together!
